The magical ocean is calling: Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of “Barbie Mermaidia”! The film begins with Elina flying through the air and still having difficulty believing that she now has wings. She is soon visited by a young sea butterfly fairy who needs her help. Laverna, banished to the Hinterlands moor by the Enchantress, seeks the Immunity Berry, which will make anyone who eats it immune to all magic. Nalu knows their location, and the Fungi have been sent to retrieve them.
Fungus Maximus, the leader of the Fungi, threatens to pour magical poison into the sea and destroy Mermaidia if Nalu doesn't lead them to the berry. Elina reaches Crystal Cove and finds no trace of Nalu, but meets the mermaid Nori. Elina uses magical seaweed to breathe underwater and follows her. Meanwhile, Nalu delays the Fungi by leading them to the Carousel of Confusion.
Elina reaches Mermaidia and convinces the mermaids to tell her the location of the oracle Delphine. Delphine disguises herself as the fairy Shellie and helps Elina and Nori find Nalu. Delphine tells them that they must travel to the bottom of the Depths of Despair to find the Mirror of the Mist and save Nalu.
Elina receives a magical pearl necklace that can transform her into a mermaid to traverse the dangerous Depths of Despair. The two set out and encounter various challenges, including underwater currents and magical fruits.
Eventually they get to the Mirror of the Mist, which shows that Nalu is being held captive by the Fungi. They learn that Laverna is looking for the immunity berry to become invincible. Elina throws the berry over a waterfall, sealing Max's poison and sacrificing her last fairy wings to become a mermaid forever.
However, the two realize that they have swapped the immunity berry for a similar-looking one. Elina eats a berry that restores her true form, with even more spectacular wings. Nori confesses her love for Nalu and returns to Fairytopia.
Meanwhile, at the Hinterland Swamps, Laverna is turned into a frog by the True Self Berry. Elina returns to Fairytopia and reunites with her family and friends.
